A suitable Disaster Recovery Solution for your business
Share
The dependency on an ICT infrastructure for businesses is enormous.
The unavailability of software, email, or files often has immediate consequences for the daily operation or production within a company.
Moreover, it can have significant financial implications. The time when a 'contingency plan' or Disaster Recovery (DR) was only reserved for larger players is over.
What is a Disaster Recovery Plan?
Disaster Recovery stands for the rapid restoration of the IT environment after a calamity or disruption.
Think of restoring critical applications and access to critical data. Everything necessary to get your business operational again on the IT front after a disruption.
Do I need that?
DR is not only about the time that systems and employees cannot work, but also about the data lost if a company has to revert to a previous version.
As a company, you should consider two essential questions:
1 How much data can I afford to lose in the event of a computer/server crash? (RPO time)
2 How quickly do I want to be operational again after a computer/server crash? (RTO time)
Depending on the answers to these questions, setting up a Disaster Recovery solution may be beneficial for your company.
If your company cannot afford for the IT environment to be 'down' for several hours, then the implementation of a DR solution is likely necessary.
Possibilities
There are many DR solutions: from basic to high-end automated.
And there is something for every budget. Depending on the needs, you can first choose between a local solution within the company site(s) itself or a decentralized (cloud) solution.
In addition, the degree of data loss and availability determines which solution is most suitable. This ranges from external backup of your servers to whether or not immediately and automatically making your production servers available in a cloud environment or other server space within the company.
The DR Plan is the basis for every solution. It describes what needs to happen with your IT infrastructure in times of need.
This can be extended to other organizational components.
Test your DR Plan!
Test your DR plan regularly. The DR solutions often provide the ability to test a Failover and Failback scenario without affecting production.
This has become extremely popular in recent years. Be prepared!
Backup is not disaster recovery!
The most well-known term is backup, or regularly copying data to another system. From a continuity perspective, backup is too narrow a concept.
Restoring files, software, and functionality goes much further than just copying data back.
When a server goes down, it must be reinstalled, configured, and possibly even replaced.
